The beauty of old video games was in their introductions — just like the game boxes packed with detailed manuals that explained how to play and told the story. At some point, it felt like developers were competing to see who could create the best intro, which then doubled as marketing to hook players. Dark and I were way too inexperienced not to be completely blown away by one of the most incredible intros we’ve ever seen. The game was MechWarrior 2, and just the idea of giant machines shooting at each other was already mind-blowing — but that final scene made us jump out of our chairs like we’d just won the Champions League. Funny thing is, we didn’t even care about football… unless it was in a video game!
