Dreaming of power inside an egg!

The real magic of an Easter egg surprise is the perfect metaphor for what might be inside: that sense of anticipation that builds excitement in the days leading up to it—much like the imagined “power” of future gaming consoles.

It’s a constant evolution, driven by increasingly powerful hardware over the years. We moved from 8-bit consoles like Nintendo and Sega Master System, to 16-bit systems like Super Nintendo and Sega Mega Drive, and eventually to the generation that marked a true turning point: the legendary 32-bit era, with the Saturn and PlayStation.

What I want to focus on is something that defined entire generations—and perhaps still does today: the ability to dream. Imagining what future graphics would look like, how smooth gameplay would become, and what visual effects would make gaming experiences even more immersive.

There was one console I wanted more than any other: the 3DO. It was one of the first—if not the first—32-bit systems, but it didn’t achieve great success due to the difficulty of developing games for it and, likely, inadequate marketing. I, however, wanted it against all odds—at least until the company decided to abandon it and shift its focus to the future with the M2 project.

The M2 was meant to be the successor to the 3DO, reportedly five to seven times more powerful than the PlayStation 1. Reading those specs, you can’t imagine how much my mind would wander—it felt like being thrown twenty years into the future. Hiroyuki Sakai of Matsushita claimed it had power comparable to the Sega Model 3, an incredibly powerful arcade system at the time. It was likely an optimistic estimate for marketing purposes, but the impact on the audience was huge: it felt like bringing an arcade cabinet straight into your home.

Sadly, the story didn’t have a happy ending, and the project was eventually abandoned. But all of this highlights something important: the beauty of imagining what the future holds. Deep down, we always tend to overestimate power, because we are never truly satisfied—we dream big, and the big companies know it well. We’re aware, in part, that we’re being sold illusions… yet we keep dreaming, because that’s what keeps us alive in the world of gaming: the pursuit of something “ultimate,” something almost impossible to define.

With that said, we’re continuing to update the site, and our “Dr. House” of programming (Dark), together with his assistants (just one—but he makes chaos for three!), will soon bring us something special: a reversal of this obsession with power, taking us back in time into the heart of retrogaming.

It may sound a bit cryptic… but for now, I can’t reveal anything more.

Happy Easter, retrogaming warriors!
