Development History
Van Buren was the codename for the planned third game in the acclaimed Fallout series, developed by Black Isle Studios. Announced in 2003, the project was highly anticipated by fans due to the successful legacy of its predecessors. Unfortunately, Van Buren was never officially released, as the development was halted by Interplay Entertainment in December 2003 because of financial difficulties, leading to the closure of Black Isle Studios. The project’s cancellation paved the way for Bethesda Softworks to acquire the rights to the franchise, eventually resulting in the release of Fallout 3 by Bethesda in 2008.
Plot and Gameplay
The game was intended to stay true to the core elements of the Fallout series, set in a post-apocalyptic world with a deep storyline and branching narratives. It was to be set mostly in the American Southwest, encompassing areas like Utah and Colorado. The plot was intended to focus on themes of conflict and survival in a devastated world, incorporating the series’ signature combination of tactical turn-based combat and RPG elements. Players would have explored the wasteland while interacting with a cast of multidimensional characters, making choices that would impact the outcome of the game.
Legacy
Even though Van Buren never reached completion, its influence can be seen in subsequent Fallout games. Elements of its storyline, characters, and aesthetics were adapted into later entries in the series, contributing to the continued success and cultivation of the Fallout universe. The tech demo that surfaced online has offered fans a glimpse of what Van Buren might have been, sparking ongoing discussions and carrying a legacy of ‘what if’ questions among the gaming community.
Curiosities
Despite its cancellation, Van Buren has maintained a dedicated following. Over the years, fragments of the project’s original design documents and concept art have been shared by former developers and acquired by fans. These artifacts have fueled community-driven efforts to create replica games or mod projects inspired by the original Van Buren vision.
