In 1985, a game was released on the Commodore 64 that broke all the established rules. With limited and far-from-advanced tools, its developers managed to create something infinitely vast. Imagination overcame every constraint of reality, programming an astronaut who could roam freely across a vast universe with multiple galaxies, each containing hundreds of planets. There were starship battles, trade of goods… all of it packed into just a few kilobytes. Back then, you had only the tools available, and with them you were forced to create, squeezing every single byte and constantly pushing beyond your limits. Now we have almost limitless hardware power—and yet, sometimes it still feels insufficient. It may sound like a paradox, but it’s the plain truth. Elite was, and still remains, a milestone in gaming. Its creators deserve nothing less than an Oscar for their brilliance.
