The beauty of retrogaming wasn’t just about the games. It was the cassette tape slowly loading, the computer running for hours, the sound of the tape recorder, the anticipation… it was the whole experience. And, of course, the joystick was an essential part of that magic.
Those were the early days of a completely new world. There were no Internet reviews or influencers to follow. It was the gaming community itself, through word of mouth and shared experiences, that pointed us toward the best way to play.
With a touch of nostalgia, I still think back to the legendary Competition Pro. Guys, to me it was like having the Holy Grail sitting next to my Commodore 128. And the excitement of playing Daley Thompson’s Decathlon is something I still struggle to put into words.
I proudly remember those frantic left-and-right joystick movements, trying to shave even a fraction of a second off my best performance. And, without fail, the inevitable blisters would appear between my fingers.
But it wasn’t suffering.
It was living the game.
It’s one of those memories that every true retrogaming enthusiast still carries in their heart.
Today, comfort and ergonomics rightly come first. Modern controllers are the result of decades of evolution, and soon we’ll take a closer look at how we got from those classic joysticks to the gamepads we use today.
But we veterans know the truth: we battled blisters on our fingers and relied on the joystick’s suction cups desperately trying to stay attached to the desk during our most frantic gaming sessions.
It may sound unbelievable to anyone who didn’t live through that era… but every word is true.
We were there, at the very beginning of the journey that would eventually lead to today’s gamepads.
Have a great weekend… and may it be blister-free!
